Week 1 MCA Beat Report - Rain rain go away

Just when we thought the winter was behind us, the weather gods have not been kind to the cricketers on the first day of the season. With continuous down pouring and rain turning into hail throughout the week the cancellation of last Saturday’s games were inevitable, much to the dismay of teams that were scheduled to play.

Sunday was a different story altogether. To those gritty Renegades (RCF) and the resolute Sunrisers, these wet field conditions were not going to deny their yearning to play. They pulled up their sleeves and got to work by making something out of nothing and got the game underway for a reduced 25 over a side contest.

RCF vs Sunrisers

That was the dawn of first live scoring game in MCA history. It was exciting to hear the buzz around the league with instant updates available to the palm of their hands. Teams around the league and the cricket leagues across GTA took notice. People were commenting on social media outlets as the game unfolded and it was certainly a riveting experience to say the least.

RCF got off to a decent start as they paced through the first power play overs to 26/1. But Darshit Patel and Kushan Vahil had other ideas. Their next couple of overs had the RCF reeling at 26/4. RCF captain Ajmal Chughtai however looked determined to steady the innings but wickets continued to tumble on the other end, until Sairam Chinnam came to the middle and provided some much needed support to the captain to change the momentum in RCF favour. Just when we thought the pair would turn things around, the Sunrisers struck again to break that partnership and eventually restricted RCF to 95/9 in 25 overs.

Sunrisers didn’t seem to take the target too lightly as they approached their half of the inning. Sunrisers openers Kuldeep Sandhu and Akashdeep Singh  got off to a great start by cruising to 37/0 at a RR of 6 plus before RCF was able to make the first breakthrough. Sunrisers captain Gaurav Angiras joined Kuldeep and they both continued their controlled aggression as the pair took the score to 80 in the 13th over and pretty much tilt the game in Sunrisers favour. Kuldeep batted with great composure and finished with an unbeaten 56 to help the Sunrisers to a resounding victory by 7 wickets with 9 overs to spare.

Raging Bulls vs Crimsonites

Meanwhile sun was out in full swing for the afternoon game and it turned out to be an even more exciting game between the Raging Bulls and the new comers the Crimsonites. Raging Bulls won the toss and elected to bat first and it appeared they had no regrets with their decision as they got off to a good start.

Bulls captain Manpreet Gujral and Sumit Kumar negotiated the Crimsonites combined spin and medium pace attack on both ends. It was Canadian national Brian Rajadurai’s turn to make the first breakthrough by sneaking pass the defence of Bulls captain to rattle the stumps.

Loosing their Captain’s wicket didn’t dissuade the Bulls. Sumit Kumar continued to bat with great conviction with Dalmeet Mann playing the anchor role. The pair took the score to 80/1 in the 16the over and things were looking peachy for the Bulls until Crimsonites Captain Vishan De Mel brought himself into the attack and the tide started turning the Crimsonites way. That was the beginning of Bulls dramatic collapse. They stumbled from strong 80/1 to 121 a/o despite the valiant knock from Sumit Kumar who went on to score a fearless 66 for the Bulls, which turned out to be the best knock of the day.

When Crimsonites started their innings they seemed tentative. They were unable to put together any meaningful partnership from their top order and were quickly in trouble at 46/5 at half way through the innings. It was time for captain Vishan De Mel’s rescue once again. Vishan played a well crafted knock to carry the innings nicely to ensure no further collapse is in cart and took Crimsonite to the finish line.

One must agree it was the Bulls undisciplined bowling that produced 39 extras especially on a short run chase, pretty much sealed their fate. Congrats to Crimsonites on their first win in MCA.

Let’s hope for more exciting cricket this coming weekend with less interruption from the mother nature.
